A Guide to iPhone Mirroring in macOS Sequoia

macOS Sequoia introduces a handy new feature called iPhone Mirroring. This allows you to view and control your iPhone directly on your Mac's screen, streamlining your workflow and boosting productivity. Let's dive into how it works.

What is iPhone Mirroring?

iPhone Mirroring is a Continuity feature that seamlessly integrates your iPhone and Mac. It essentially casts your iPhone's display onto your Mac, allowing you to interact with it using your Mac's keyboard, mouse, or trackpad. This means you can respond to messages, browse apps, and manage notifications without ever picking up your phone.

This feature is especially useful for tasks that require extensive typing, like drafting long emails or editing documents. It also offers a privacy advantage, as your iPhone can be tucked away while you interact with it on your Mac.

Setting Up iPhone Mirroring

Getting started with iPhone Mirroring is a breeze:

  1. Launch the App: Locate the iPhone Mirroring app in your Mac's Dock and click to open it.
  2. Follow the Prompts:  Click "Continue" on the informational screen. You'll likely be prompted to unlock your iPhone with your passcode.
  3. Get Started: Click "Get Started" to initiate the mirroring process.
  4. Notification Preferences: You'll be asked if you want to allow iPhone notifications to appear in your Mac's Notification Center. Choose your preference.
  5. Authentication: Decide whether you want to authenticate each time you use iPhone Mirroring or set it to authenticate automatically.

Remember that your iPhone needs to be locked for mirroring to work. Once connected, you can navigate your iPhone using your Mac's input devices. Click and drag to scroll, single-click to tap, and use familiar keyboard shortcuts like Command + H to return to the Home Screen.

A Few Things to Keep in Mind

While iPhone Mirroring offers a convenient way to interact with your iPhone, there are a few limitations:

  • Compatibility:  To use iPhone Mirroring, you'll need a Mac running macOS Sequoia with an Apple silicon chip (M1 or later) or a T2 security chip. Your iPhone needs to be running iOS 18 or later. For detailed compatibility information, refer to Apple's Support Page.
  • Restrictions: iPhone Mirroring won't work if your Mac is currently using AirPlay or Sidecar. You also can't use Continuity Camera while mirroring.
  • App Limitations: Some streaming apps may have restrictions that prevent them from working correctly with iPhone Mirroring.
